EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting photograph, sourced from Mary Evans Picture Library, captures the essence of a picturesque and foppish French boy in the late Victorian era, circa 1875. Dressed in an extravagant and historically significant costume, the young lad dons a pleated skirt made of spotted fabric, adding a playful and whimsical touch to his attire. The skirt is paired with a floppy, striped necktie and falling collar, both adorned with intricate patterns that add to the overall visual appeal. Checkered socks peek out from beneath the skirt, adding a touch of contrast and texture to the outfit. The boy completes his ensemble with pumps featuring large ribbon bows, adding a feminine touch to his appearance. His long, flowing hair cascades down his back, adding to the overall effect of the image. Despite the extravagant and perhaps even effeminate appearance of the boy's costume, it is important to remember that such attire was not uncommon for boys of the time, particularly among the upper classes. The use of kilts, pleated skirts, and other traditionally feminine elements in boys' clothing was a common practice during the Victorian era, reflecting the more fluid gender roles and societal norms of the time. This image offers a fascinating glimpse into the past and provides a unique insight into the fashion and societal norms of the late Victorian era. The boy's expression of pure joy and excitement as he rides his tricycle adds a playful and endearing quality to the photograph, making it a truly captivating and timeless piece of history.
