Chinese Boatmen at Port Arthur

Chinese boatmen in the Port at Lushunkou, a district in the municipality of Dalian, Liaoning province, also called Lushun City or Lushun Port, formerly known as both Port Arthur and Ryojun. During the Russo-Japanese war, the Russians surrendered Port Arthur to the Japanese after nearly a years siege: the Japanese expended 58, 000 killed or wounded to obtain the town. As can be seen here, Lushunkou boasts an excellent natural harbour, the possession and control of which became a casus belli (justification for the act of war) during the Russo-Japanese War ). Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905, at the bustling Port Arthur in Lushunkou, Dalian, Liaoning Province, China. The natural harbor, seen here teeming with Chinese boatmen skillfully maneuvering their sculls and junks, was a strategic prize coveted by both Russia and Japan. The possession and control of Port Arthur became the casus belli, or justification for the act of war, between the two powers. In this image, the boats glide effortlessly through the water, their sails full and billowing in the wind. The backdrop of battleships and military installations serves as a stark reminder of the impending conflict. The Russians, who had fortified Port Arthur since the late 19th century, ultimately surrendered the town to the Japanese after a grueling year-long siege. The Japanese had expended an enormous amount of resources, with 58,000 killed or wounded in the process of gaining control of the valuable harbor. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing a visual record of the daily life and activities that took place at the Port Arthur prior to the outbreak of war.
