EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, taken circa 1840, offers a glimpse into the rich and complex history of Chad, a central African country named after the large lake that dominates its landscape. The photograph, held in the esteemed collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, depicts a serene yet tense moment along the shores of Lake Chad. A herd of elephants, their massive forms silhouetted against the golden sunset, make their way through the shallow waters. Their deliberate pace belies the urgency of their crossing, as they navigate the treacherous terrain. In the foreground, a rhinoceros stands watchfully, its ears pricked, eyes fixed on the elephants. The rhino's unease is palpable, as it senses the potential danger that the large herd may pose to its territory. The scene is further enlivened by the presence of a traditional African boat, its sails billowing gently in the wind, as it passes by, adding a sense of movement and dynamism to the otherwise static tableau. The photograph, taken over 170 years ago, offers a fascinating window into the past, providing a glimpse into the diverse and abundant wildlife that once thrived around Lake Chad. It also serves as a poignant reminder of the historical significance of this region, which has been home to various civilizations, including the ancient Kingdom of Bornu, and continues to be an important cultural and economic hub in Africa today.
