This evocative print captures the intensity and chaos of the Battle of Williamsburg, fought on May 5, 1862, during the American Civil War. The scene focuses on Union General Winfield S. Hancock's brave charge against the Confederate forces led by General Joseph E. Johnston. With McClellan's Union Army attempting to advance towards the Confederate capital at Richmond, Hancock's brigade was ordered to break through the Confederate line and seize the high ground at the railroad cut. The image portrays the moment of impact as Union soldiers, their faces set with determination and resolve, charge forward into the hail of Confederate gunfire. The Confederate line, composed of determined and well-prepared soldiers, stands firm, their muskets at the ready.
