EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the triumphant moment when the citizens of Leiden, Netherlands, celebrated the successful expulsion of Spanish forces on October 3, 1574. The Battle of Leiden, a pivotal event in the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule, began on October 1 when a Spanish army, led by the Duke of Alva, laid siege to the city. For seven long weeks, the people of Leiden endured a brutal blockade, facing starvation and disease. Despite their hardships, the citizens refused to surrender, and their resolve was rewarded when a relief force, led by the Count of Mansfeld, arrived on September 28. The Spanish, weakened by their own supply shortages, were unable to withstand the onslaught, and on October 3, they retreated, leaving Leiden in Dutch hands. This print, created in the aftermath of the battle, captures the jubilant scene as the people of Leiden gather to celebrate their victory. The Spanish flag, now tattered and torn, is being lowered from the city walls, while the Dutch flag, a symbol of freedom and independence, is raised high. The crowd cheers and fires weapons into the air, their faces etched with relief and joy. The Battle of Leiden marked a turning point in the Dutch Revolt, boosting morale and inspiring other cities to resist Spanish rule. It would be several more years before the Dutch would ultimately gain their independence, but this victory was a crucial step on the long road to freedom.
