EDITORS COMMENTS
This colored engraving depicts Alphonse XII of Spain during his princely infancy. Born on November 30, 1857, in Madrid, Alphonse was the eldest son of Queen Isabella II and her third husband, Duke of Montpensier. At the time this image was created, Alphonse was the heir apparent to the Spanish throne, which was in a state of turmoil due to the Carlist Wars. The engraving, titled "Alphonse XII as a Prince," is a testament to the charm and innocence of the young prince. He is depicted with a thoughtful expression, his face framed by a mass of curly brown hair. The intricate details of the engraving show the prince's attire, which includes a velvet jacket, a cravat, and a sash adorned with the royal Bourbon house's insignia. The background of the image is simple, with a plain wall and a window providing a subtle contrast to the rich colors of the prince's clothing. The engraving was published in "La Ilustración Española y Americana," a Spanish and American weekly illustrated magazine that was popular during the 19th century. The publication was known for its high-quality illustrations, which captured the attention of readers across Europe and the Americas. This image of Alphonse XII as a prince was undoubtedly one of the most popular and widely circulated depictions of the future king during his infancy. Alphonse XII ascended the Spanish throne in 1874, following his mother's abdication. He ruled until his untimely death in 1885, at the age of 27. This engraving serves as a poignant reminder of a young prince's innocence and the promise of a bright future that was cut short by fate.
