This colored engraving depicts Alphonse XII of Spain during his princely infancy. Born on November 30, 1857, in Madrid, Alphonse was the eldest son of Queen Isabella II and her third husband, Duke of Montpensier. At the time this image was created, Alphonse was the heir apparent to the Spanish throne, which was in a state of turmoil due to the Carlist Wars. The engraving, titled "Alphonse XII as a Prince," is a testament to the charm and innocence of the young prince. He is depicted with a thoughtful expression, his face framed by a mass of curly brown hair. The intricate details of the engraving show the prince's attire, which includes a velvet jacket, a cravat, and a sash adorned with the royal Bourbon house's insignia. The background of the image is simple, with a plain wall and a window providing a subtle contrast to the rich colors of the prince's clothing.
