Adela Corsanda Maria Villiers, later Lady Ibbetson (? - 1860), is depicted in this beautiful portrait photograph, taken around the year 1860. Adela was the daughter of the 4th Earl of Clare and was known for her striking beauty and intelligence. She married Colonel Charles Philip Ibbetson in 1854, and the couple went on to have six children together. Colonel Ibbetson was a distinguished military officer who served in India and was later appointed Governor of Jamaica. Adela accompanied him on many of his travels, and she became known for her gracious hospitality and her involvement in various charitable causes. This photograph captures Adela in her prime, with her dark hair styled in an elegant updo and her piercing blue eyes gazing directly at the camera. Her fashionable dress, adorned with lace and ruffles, reflects the opulence of the Victorian era. Despite her privileged upbringing, Adela was known for her compassion and her commitment to helping those in need. She was particularly interested in education and established a school for girls in Jamaica, which provided opportunities for young women who might otherwise have had limited prospects. Adela's life was marked by tragedy as well as triumph. Her husband died in 1873, and she was left to raise their six children on her own.
