EDITORS COMMENTS
11th Earl Northumberland, Josceline Percy (1644-1670): A Nobleman of Power and Influence in Restoration England This striking portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Josceline Percy, the 11th Earl of Northumberland, during the Restoration period in England (1660-1688). Born in 1644, Josceline Percy was the eldest son of the 10th Earl and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Seymour. He became the Earl of Northumberland upon his father's death in 1665. The 11th Earl Northumberland was a significant figure in Restoration England, known for his political acumen and powerful alliances. He was a close friend and ally of King Charles II, who rewarded him with various appointments, including the position of Lord Chamberlain of the Royal Household in 1669. The Earl's influence extended beyond the court, as he was also a prominent figure in the Church of England. He was a patron of theologians and scholars, and he supported the building of new churches and the restoration of old ones in his northern estates. Despite his close ties to the court, Josceline Percy was not without controversy. He was involved in several disputes with neighboring landowners and was accused of involvement in the Rye House Plot, a failed assassination attempt against King Charles II and his brother, the Duke of York, in 1683. This portrait, likely painted in the late 17th century, captures the Earl's regal bearing and sophisticated air. He is depicted wearing the robes of a Privy Councillor, a sign of his high rank and influence. The Earl's piercing gaze and serious expression convey a sense of determination and intensity, reflecting the complex and dynamic political landscape of Restoration England. Josceline Percy, the 11th Earl of Northumberland, died in 1670, leaving behind a legacy of power, influence, and controversy. This portrait serves as a reminder of a pivotal period in English history, when the monarchy was restored, and the nobility wielded significant power and influence.
