EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable sea chart of the southern part of the Atlantic coasts of Africa and Brazil, created by Jan Luyken and Johannes van Keulen in the late 17th century. The intricate details depicted on this map transport us back to an era when cartography was both an art form and a scientific endeavor. The image features a merman, symbolizing Neptune with his trident, holding the sea chart while riding horseback across the vast ocean. This fusion of mythology and geography highlights humanity's fascination with exploring uncharted territories during that time period. Surrounding him are young men adorned with feather headdresses, representing diverse cultures encountered along these coastal regions. As we delve into this visual masterpiece, we can observe compasses pointing northward and roses indicating wind directions—essential tools for seafarers navigating treacherous waters. The inclusion of fish further emphasizes the importance of maritime life in shaping human civilization. Beyond its navigational significance, this sea chart also reflects religious undertones as it intertwines elements from Christianity. It reminds us that exploration was not only driven by curiosity but also influenced by spiritual beliefs. Quint Lox's skillful capture immortalizes this historical artifact within a single frame—a testament to our enduring fascination with maps as gateways to understanding our world's past.
