EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a group of draped figures, believed to be created in the early 1460s. The artist employed various techniques such as tip brush and fine pen with brown ink to bring this artwork to life. Measuring approximately 4 5/16 x 5 7/8 inches (11 x 14.9 cm), these drawings are attributed to the renowned Italian painter Antonello da Messina, also known as Antonello di Giovanni d'Antonio. Antonello's profound influence can be seen in this piece, which exhibits several features characteristic of his style. One notable aspect is the elongated proportions of the figures, giving them an ethereal quality that draws viewers into their world. Additionally, the heavy drapery adorning each figure is meticulously arranged with sharp and angular folds, showcasing Antonello's mastery over capturing texture and form. What makes this drawing particularly intriguing is its fusion of styles from both Northern European and Netherlandish-Burgundian traditions. This amalgamation demonstrates Antonello's absorption of diverse artistic influences during his time. The Liszt Collection has beautifully preserved this remarkable artwork by Antonello da Messina, offering art enthusiasts a glimpse into his innovative approach and timeless talent.
