MAYDAY HOSPITAL, LONDON ROAD, WEST THORNTON, CROYDON, GREATER LONDON. Denis Sweaney, chairman of Croydon Area Health Authority, using a trowel to smooth the final batch of concrete during the topping out of the services block at Mayday Hospital.
Laings Southern Region was awarded the contract for the first phase of a multi-million pound five phase redevelopment project at Mayday Hospital. The contract included a new three storey surgical block with a linked service block, which was to be connected to the main hospital complex by bridge. The topping out of the services block at Mayday Hospital was aptly held on May Day. During the ceremony, an engraved silver trowel was presented to Denis Sweaney by Frank Bryer, joint managing director of the Construction Company. The occasion was also marked by the publication of Template ; the first in a series of printed information leaflets by the commissioning team, which described the topping out ceremony and provided a floor by floor diagram of the new facilities.
