Old Putney Bridge, Putney, Wandsworth, Greater London. The view from Putney showing the old Putney Bridge crossing the frozen River Thames, during the winter of 1881, with the Fulham foreshore in the background.
In January 1881 a low pressure system brought some of the most severe blizzards and freezing temperatures to southern parts of the United Kingdom. The effects of this weather can be seen in this view of Putney Bridge, also known as Fulham Bridge.
The bridge was badly damaged by a river barge in 1870. It was repaired but its days were numbered and in 1880 work began on a replacement.
