EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Union general, Winfield Scott Hancock, who played a pivotal role in shaping American history during the mid-19th century. The engraving, created by J Rogers and published in 1862-1867 as part of "The War with the South: A History of the Late Rebellion" immortalizes Hancock's legacy. Hancock's significance cannot be overstated; he was instrumental in securing victory for the Union at the historic Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. His strategic brilliance and unwavering leadership proved crucial in turning the tide against Confederate forces during this decisive battle. Beyond his military achievements, Hancock ventured into politics after the Civil War. In 1880, he emerged as a Democratic candidate for president but narrowly lost to James Garfield. As we gaze upon this remarkable print today, we are transported back to an era defined by conflict and resilience. It stands as a testament to both Hancock's individual contributions and those made by countless others who dedicated themselves to their country during one of its most challenging chapters—the American Civil War.
