EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white etching, titled "Veduta del Arco di Septimio Severo, et del Campidoglio," is a stunning 17th-century work by the Italian artist Israel Silvestre the Younger. The image portrays a panoramic view of ancient Rome, with the Arco di Septimio Severo (Arch of Septimius Severus) taking center stage. The arch, a triumphal monument built in 203 AD to commemorate the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus and his family, stands proudly at the end of the Via Appia, surrounded by the bustling Roman Forum and the Campidoglio, the Capitoline Hill. Israel Silvestre, a French artist who spent most of his career in Italy, masterfully captured the architectural grandeur of Rome in this etching on laid paper. The intricate details of the arch's decorative elements, including the relief sculptures and inscriptions, are beautifully rendered, while the surrounding landscape is filled with a sense of liveliness and activity. The monochrome palette adds a timeless quality to the image, transporting us back to the ancient Roman era. This etching is a testament to Silvestre's artistic skill and his deep appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of Rome. It is a must-see for anyone interested in art, architecture, and the history of Rome. This particular print is part of the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and is a valuable addition to any art gallery or center.
