EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print by Dorothea Lange captures the essence of a man who has spent more than twenty-five years as a bindle-stiff, wandering from mines to lumber camps to farms in Napa Valley, California. His weathered face and worn clothing tell the story of a life lived on the road, embodying the spirit of resilience and determination that characterized those who formed the backbone of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) in California before the war. The image evokes a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era, when men like this were integral to America's workforce. The man's belongings bundled up in his bindle serve as a poignant reminder of the hardships faced by itinerant workers during the Great Depression. Dorothea Lange's keen eye for capturing raw emotion and human experience is evident in this photograph, which was part of Carleton Parker's "Studies on IWW." Through her lens, she sheds light on an often overlooked segment of society - those who lived hand-to-mouth existence as they traveled across country in search of work. This image serves as a testament to both the struggles and resilience of individuals like this bindle-stiff, whose stories deserve to be remembered and honored.
