EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Thomas Hobbes, a prominent 17th-century English philosopher. Created by the talented artist James Posselwhite in 1836, this engraving beautifully portrays Hobbes' intellectual prowess and contemplative nature. Hobbes, born in 1588 and passing away in 1679, is renowned for his groundbreaking work on political philosophy. His most famous publication, Leviathan (1651), delved into the intricacies of government and social contract theory. This masterpiece solidified his place as one of history's greatest thinkers. In this portrait, we see Hobbes exuding an air of wisdom and authority. The lines etched by Posselwhite skillfully capture every detail of his face - from the furrowed brow that suggests deep thought to the intense gaze that hints at a profound understanding of human nature. The monochrome aesthetic adds a timeless quality to this image, emphasizing its historical significance.
