EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to the ancient city of Athens in 1937. The image showcases the magnificent Temple of Nike, an architectural gem nestled within the iconic Acropolis. Created by renowned artist Martin Hurlimann, this illustration is a part of his notable work titled "Das Mittelmeer: Landschaft, Baukunst und Volksleben im Kreise des Mittellandischen Meeres" which delves into Mediterranean architecture, landscapes, and people. The Temple of Nike stands as a testament to ancient Greek civilization and its rich religious heritage. Its grandeur is captured beautifully in this monochrome depiction, emphasizing the intricate details of its pillars and columns that have withstood the test of time since their construction in the 5th century BC. As we gaze upon this print, we are transported to a different era where worshipers once flocked to this sacred site seeking solace or offering prayers to Athena Nike, the goddess of victory. The surrounding landscape adds depth and context to our understanding of how this temple was integrated into Athenian life.
