EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures a moment of intense historical significance - Tartars Carrying the Head of Heinrich before Castle Liegnitz, as Saint Hedwig witnesses her son's soul being carried to heaven in a dream. The second half of the 14th century was a tumultuous time, marked by battles and invasions that shaped the course of history. The intricate details captured by the Workshop of the Codex of Lubin bring this scene to life, showcasing the Gothic artistry and storytelling prowess of the era. The image conveys both tragedy and hope, as Tartars carry out their brutal act while Saint Hedwig finds solace in her vision. The Battle of Legnica, also known as the Battle of Liegnitz or Wahlstatt, was a pivotal moment in Polish history. Henry II, also known as Henry II the Pious, met his tragic end at the hands of Mongol invaders led by Batu Khan. This event would have far-reaching consequences for Poland and its people. As we gaze upon this watercolor on parchment masterpiece from the J. Paul Getty Museum collection in Los Angeles, we are reminded of the power of art to preserve and illuminate moments from our past. It serves as a poignant reminder of our shared human experience and resilience in times of adversity.
