EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of ancient Chinese art from the Period of Division, specifically dating back to 557-581. The image features standing bodhisattvas accompanied by monks, Pratyekabuddhas, lions, and apasaras. Carved with great precision and skill into stone with pigment, this sculpture is a testament to the rich heritage and artistic traditions of China. The close-up shot allows us to appreciate the intricate details of this masterpiece. The standing bodhisattvas are depicted in the abhayamudra hand gesture, symbolizing fearlessness and protection. Their serene expressions exude wisdom and compassion that are characteristic of Buddhist teachings. The presence of monks adds an element of spirituality to the composition while Pratyekabuddhas represent those who attain enlightenment through their own efforts without relying on a teacher or guide. Lions stand as symbols of strength and power in Buddhism, further enhancing the symbolism within this artwork. Set against a white background in a studio shot style, every color and pigment used in this carving stands out vividly. This photograph was taken at an educational institution known as Arthur M Sackler Gallery under the Smithsonian Institution's umbrella. As we gaze upon this extraordinary piece from centuries ago, we are reminded not only of China's rich cultural history but also how art can transcend time and connect us with our spiritual selves.
