EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, created by Harris & Ewing in 1912, captures a historic moment in aviation history with Senorita Lenore Rivero and aviation pioneer Tony Jannus aboard the Rex Smith airplane. The image showcases Jannus, the first-ever scheduled airline pilot, making a flight over Potomac Park in Washington D.C. with a female passenger. Lenore Rivero, the daughter of the Cuban minister to the USA, dons a securely tied-down skirt and stands behind a man who starts the propeller. Jannus, born in 1889, made several groundbreaking flights with female passengers, demonstrating the safety and feasibility of air travel.
