EDITORS COMMENTS
Promenade deck on SS Insulinde, 1914. A glimpse into the elegant world of early 20th-century sea travel aboard the Dutch steam ship SS Insulinde. This photo print, captured by Kirk & Sons of Cowes, transports us back to a time when this magnificent vessel served as a vital link between Rotterdam and Jakarta. Built in 1914 for the esteemed Rotterdam Lloyd company, SS Insulinde was not only a passenger freight ship but also an emblem of luxury and comfort. The promenade deck depicted in this image showcases its grandeur - a place where passengers could stroll leisurely while enjoying breathtaking views of the open ocean. However, history had other plans for SS Insulinde. Laid up during World War I and later sold to Fabre Lines of Marseilles in 1933, she underwent a transformation into Banfora. Renamed and repurposed as a route from Marseilles to West Africa, she continued her journey through turbulent times. In World War II, SS Insulinde found herself serving yet another purpose - as a British troop and supply transport vessel. Her sturdy structure proved invaluable during these challenging times. This remarkable print captures not just the physical beauty of the ship's promenade deck but also serves as a window into its rich history spanning continents and conflicts alike.
