EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate Six" from Simon Gribelin's "Book of Ornament," created in 1704, is an exquisite example of eighteenth-century French heraldic design. The intricately engraved print, now housed at the Art Institute of Chicago, showcases a complex circular composition filled with an array of ornate and patterned shapes. The image, a testament to the beauty of monochromatic art, is a close-up view of the design, revealing the intricacies of the circular arrangement. The plate is a masterclass in heraldic design, featuring a blazon, or a description of a coat of arms, in the center. The circular design is divided into quadrants, each filled with an intricate pattern. The top left quadrant displays a series of circular shapes, the top right features a winding staircase motif, the bottom left showcases a series of interconnected diamonds, and the bottom right quadrant is filled with a complex geometric pattern.
