New covered market at Darlington, 1864. Creator: Unknown
New covered market at Darlington, 1864. The rapid growth and largely increasing population of Darlington and its vicinity have been the means of inducing the Local Board of Health to erect the handsome and commodious new covered market of which we give an Engraving. This building is on the verge of completion, and was successfully opened by the Christmas show of the Northern Counties Fat Stock and Poultry Society, held on the 9th, 10th, and 11th December. The event was rendered all the more auspicious in consequence of the show being unusually large. Almost all classes of animals were better and more numerously represented than on any previous occasion, whilst the entries for poultry were nearly doubled, auguring a future of celebrity equal to that of Birmingham'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864
