EDITORS COMMENTS
The Lamentation over Christ with the Three Marys," also known as the "Polittico di San Bartolomeo," is a poignant and moving masterpiece created by Ambrogio Bergognone between 1515 and 1520. This exquisite oil on wood painting is currently housed in the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, Italy. At the heart of the composition lies the lifeless body of Christ, his serene expression contrasting with the grief and sorrow of the three Marys, Mary Magdalene, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Salome, who are depicted in various stages of mourning. Mary Magdalene, with her long, flowing hair and anguished expression, tenderly touches Christ's face, while Mary of Cleophas and Mary Salome look on in disbelief and despair. The scene is set against the backdrop of the Ascension of Christ, with angels in the sky bearing witness to the Glorious Mystery of the Resurrection. The three Marys, as devoted disciples of Jesus Christ, are shown here in their loyalty and belief, as they prepare to anoint Christ's body with myrrh and spices in accordance with the New Testament. This painting is a testament to the deep faith and emotion that characterized the Italian Renaissance, and is a fine example of the Milanese School of painting. The intricately detailed figures and the use of light and shadow create a sense of depth and realism that draws the viewer into the scene, allowing them to contemplate the profound significance of the Easter story and the salvation it represents. The Three Marys, with their unwavering belief and devotion, continue to inspire and captivate viewers, reminding us of the importance of faith, hope, and love in the face of adversity.
