EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a marketing shot of Hamax disinfectant in 1963, showcasing the artistic talent of Michael Walters. Hamax cleaning products, based in Mexborough, South Yorkshire, were renowned for their production of bleaches and disinfectants during this era. The company's rich history dates back several decades before it changed hands from the Hamer family in 1991. Unfortunately, despite its legacy, Hamax only continued trading for another four years until its closure in 1994. The image itself reflects the essence of domestic life in 1960s Britain. A stylishly dressed woman is depicted reaching for a bottle of Hamax disinfectant while standing by her kitchen sink. This snapshot not only highlights the importance placed on cleanliness and hygiene during that time but also provides an insight into women's roles as housewives and caretakers. Michael Walters' monochromatic composition beautifully captures the spirit of this era with his attention to detail and composition. His work has immortalized a moment that represents both industry and fashion trends prevalent at that time. As we admire this photograph today, let us remember the significance of companies like Hamax who played an integral role in shaping our country's household practices throughout history.
