EDITORS COMMENTS
Gods and Animals in a Landscape: A Fragment from a Scene of Buddha Shakyamuni's Sermon to Indra This enigmatic fragment, dating from the 2nd to early 3rd century, offers a tantalizing glimpse into the rich artistic traditions of ancient Gandhara, a region located at the crossroads of South Asia and Central Asia, now modern-day Pakistan. The fragment, which is part of a larger scene, depicts a serene Buddha Shakyamuni delivering a sermon to the god Indra, surrounded by an array of gods and animals in a lush, idyllic landscape. The gods, depicted in human form, are shown in various poses, some in deep meditation, others in animated conversation with each other. Animals, both real and mythical, frolic in the background, adding a sense of playfulness and vitality to the scene. The fragment is carved from gray schist with traces of paint, a common medium for sculpture in the region during this period. Buddhism, which originated in India, had spread to Gandhara by the 1st century CE, and the art of this region reflects the syncretic nature of the religion, blending Buddhist and Hindu influences. The fragment's intricate details and masterful execution are a testament to the artistic sophistication of the time. This fragment is a precious reminder of the rich cultural heritage of South and Southeast Asia, and a reminder of the enduring influence of Buddhism on the artistic traditions of the region. It is currently housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it continues to inspire awe and wonder in visitors from around the world.
