EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of German Renaissance cartouches and works in metal and enamel. Created by an unknown artist in 1898, this collection features a wide range of ornamental objects that exemplify the technical perfection and beauty of form achieved by German goldsmiths during this period. The print includes various elements from prestigious collections across Germany. Figures 1 and 2 display stunning cartouches from a pedigree housed in the Sammlung vaterlandischer Altertumer at Stuttgart. Figures 3-17 exhibit intricate decorations found on small altars, reliquaries, and a cross from the treasure of the rich chapel at Munich's Royal Residence. Additionally, figures 18-20 showcase parts of ornamental objects while figures 21-23 highlight mountings on a baldrick based on drawings by Hans Mielich. Notably, figure 24 presents an enchanting ornamental pendant sourced from Dresden's Sammlung des grunen Gewolbes, while figure 25 displays a point of a scabbard crafted by Hans Mielich. The assemblage is completed with figure 26 featuring another mesmerizing ornamental pendant obtained from Pest's Museum. Southern Germany emerged as a prominent hub for skilled artisans working with precious metals during this era. Their expertise extended to creating drinking vessels, table-services, weapons, rings, girdles, pendants adorned with intricate designs, bracelets, ecclesiastical plate pieces - all meticulously crafted with artistic flair. Plate 79 extracted from "The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated from H. Dolmetsch's original German text provides valuable insight into this remarkable period in art history (published by B. T Batford in London). This print serves as both an homage to these talented craftsmen and an invitation to admire their masterful creations.
