EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the regal couple, Charles I and Henrietta Maria, in 1641. Created by the talented artist Wenceslaus Hollar, this piece captures the essence of their royal stature during the 17th century. Charles I, known as King of Great Britain and Ireland, stands tall with an air of authority. His intricate collar adds a touch of elegance to his attire while symbolizing his role as Defender of the Faith. Beside him is his beloved wife Henrietta Maria, Queen Consort and Bourbon princess from Bohemia. Her fashion-forward dress reflects her impeccable taste and status. The etching beautifully highlights their hairstyles; Charles' hair cascades gracefully over his shoulders while Henrietta's is styled in a sophisticated manner befitting a queen. In this portrait, Hollar skillfully portrays both strength and tenderness between husband and wife. Their connection is palpable through their subtle gestures - Charles gently rests his hand on Henrietta's shoulder as she gazes at him with admiration. This stunning artwork not only serves as a visual representation of historical figures but also offers us insight into their marriage and partnership. It reminds us that even amidst political turmoil, love can thrive within royalty. As we admire this remarkable piece by Wenceslaus Hollar, it allows us to appreciate the rich heritage embodied by Charles I and Henrietta Maria during one of England's most significant eras.
