EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enigmatic figure of C. K. Marshall, believed to be Honorable Charles Kimball Marshall from Mississippi, taken between 1865 and 1880. The creator of this intriguing portrait remains unknown. With a full beard adorning his face, Marshall exudes an air of wisdom and authority that is characteristic of men in the late 19th century America. The image was part of the Brady Handy Collection housed at the Congressional Library, showcasing Mathew B. Brady's remarkable photography skills during that era. This stereographic card offers a glimpse into Marshall's life as he poses for what could possibly be a portrait or even a religious figure. As we delve into this still image frozen in time, we are left wondering about Marshall's story and his role within society during those tumultuous years following the Civil War. His presence evokes curiosity about his contributions to his country and community. Preserved by Levin C. Handy, another notable photographer of that period, this photograph serves as a testament to their dedication in capturing historical moments through glass negatives. Today, this piece from Heritage Art resides within the Library of Congress archives - an invaluable record that sheds light on individuals who have shaped our nation's history but remain shrouded in mystery.
