American Company's Warehouse on Cape Signal, 1889. Creator: Unknown

American Company's Warehouse on Cape Signal, 1889. From a collection consisting of an album and individual photographs that document the Arctic voyage in 1889 of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii (present-day Anadyr') on the Bering Sea in northeastern Russia. The unique binding, date of acquisition, and inventory number of the album suggest that it belonged to the photograph collection of Emperor Nicholas II. The album contains photographs of the local Chukchi people and views of the harbor Petropavlovsk, the village of Nikol'skoe on Bering Island, and Novo-Mariinskii, where construction of the first building is shown. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the American Company's Warehouse on Cape Signal, taken in 1889. The image is from a unique album that documents the Arctic voyage of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and the construction of the Russian settlement of Novo-Mariinskii (present-day Anadyr') on the Bering Sea in northeastern Russia. The album, which is part of the Russian State Library's collection, was most likely owned by Emperor Nicholas II, as evidenced by the album's binding, acquisition date, and inventory number. The photograph showcases the imposing exterior of the warehouse, with its tall, angular structure and distinctive chimney. Moored ships can be seen in the background, their masts reaching towards the sky. The image offers a glimpse into the meeting of frontiers between Russia and America during the late 19th century, a time when trade and exploration were driving forces in the Arctic region. The American Company, though not explicitly named in the photograph, was a significant player in the fur trade in the Bering Sea during this period. The warehouse served as a vital hub for the storage and distribution of goods, facilitating the exchange of valuable furs and other commodities between the local Chukchi people and Russian settlers. This photograph is a testament to the rich historical and cultural heritage of the Arctic region and the pivotal role it played in the global trade networks of the 19th century. The image's monochromatic palette adds to its timeless and evocative quality, transporting us back to a bygone era.
