EDITORS COMMENTS
The 445-ton steam yacht Vanessa gracefully glides through the waters, capturing a moment frozen in time. This photo print, taken in 1912 by Kirk & Sons of Cowes, showcases the sheer elegance and grandeur of this magnificent vessel. Originally built by Ramage & Ferguson in Leith and launched in 1899, Vanessa later earned the name Golden Eagle. Its rich history is intertwined with its creators - Arthur Henry Kirk and Edgar WP Kirk - who were renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship. The image portrays a broadside view of the boat as it majestically sails across the ocean. The monochrome tones add a timeless quality to this snapshot from America's early 20th century maritime heritage. It serves as a reminder of an era when steam yachts like Vanessa symbolized luxury, adventure, and exploration. Located off England's Isle of Wight, Cowes was not only home to Kirk & Sons but also served as a picturesque backdrop for many nautical endeavors. The United States' influence on this piece is evident through its American connection. This remarkable photograph captures both the artistry involved in shipbuilding during that period and highlights water transport's significance as a mode of transportation at that time. As we gaze upon this historical artifact today, we can't help but be transported back to an age where sailing boats like Vanessa represented opulence and sophistication.
