EDITORS COMMENTS
The 118-foot racing yacht Cariad, a true masterpiece of maritime engineering, gracefully cuts through the waters in this photo print. Built by Summers & Payne in Southampton for Lord Dunraven in 1896, this magnificent vessel was named after the Welsh word for Sweetheart - a fitting tribute to its undeniable beauty. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail by Kirk & Sons of Cowes, the Cariad showcases the epitome of elegance and speed. Its gaff rig design and close-hauled position demonstrate its prowess as a formidable racing yacht during the early 20th century. The monochrome image captures not only the grandeur of this sailing marvel but also transports us back to an era when wind-powered transportation ruled supreme. Located off England's Isle of Wight, Cowes served as both homeport and inspiration for Kirk & Sons' shipbuilding legacy. Under the skilled craftsmanship of Arthur E. Payne and William Umpleby Kirk, every aspect of Cariad's construction exudes excellence. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded that yachts like Cariad were more than just vessels; they represented a way of life - one filled with adventure on open seas and boundless freedom. This print is a testament to their enduring allure.
