This engraving, titled "Nicholas Borbonius, Latin poet and tutor" captures the essence of a man who left his mark on literature and education during the Renaissance period. Created by Hans Holbein the Younger in 1812, this print showcases Borbonius' intellectual prowess and influence. Nicholas Borbonius was not just an ordinary poet; he held the esteemed position of tutor to Joan d'Albret, daughter of Margaret Queen of Navarre. His role as a mentor to royalty speaks volumes about his knowledge and expertise in Latin poetry. The artist Thomas Cheesman beautifully handcolored this copperplate stipple engraving on pink paper, adding depth and vibrancy to Borbonius' portrait. The attention to detail is evident in every stroke, capturing the intensity in his eyes and the wisdom etched upon his face.
