EDITORS COMMENTS

Created using gouache and watercolour on paper, this masterpiece measures 47.5 x 29.5 cm and is currently housed in the Corcoran Collection at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D. C. , USA. The painting beautifully captures the essence of Edwardian London with its wet streets and bustling figures going about their daily lives. The iconic Big Ben stands tall amidst the rain-soaked landscape, while Westminster Bridge stretches across the River Thames in the background. Hassam's impressionist style brings life to every brushstroke, creating a vivid depiction of street life during this era. The Houses of Parliament and Palace of Westminster can be seen majestically framing Big Ben, symbolizing British heritage and power. The artist's attention to detail is remarkable as he skillfully portrays passersby braving the rain with umbrellas in hand. This scene transports viewers back in time to experience London's atmospheric charm firsthand. Through his use of color and light, Hassam masterfully captures not only a specific moment but also evokes emotions tied to meteorology and climate science.
