EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning lithograph print captures the majestic Dam of Marib, a symbol of ancient engineering and civilization in Yemen. Built by Prince Itamara Sabai, this famous dam with its intricate sluices was once the pride of the Sabaeans or people of Yemen. However, tragedy struck when the dam burst, leading to the abandonment of the capital city of Marib.
The ruins of this great dyke were eventually restored in the fifth and sixth centuries AD, reminiscent of similar tanks in Aden. The image evokes a sense of wonder at the ingenuity and craftsmanship of those who came before us.
The black and white depiction adds a timeless quality to this historical scene, highlighting both the grandeur and desolation that now surrounds these ancient ruins. The abandoned nature of Marib serves as a poignant reminder of how quickly civilizations can rise and fall.
As we gaze upon this print, we are transported back in time to an era where princes ruled over vast kingdoms and engineering feats like the Dam of Marib stood as testaments to human innovation. It is a visual representation not only of history but also resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
