EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an illustration of the extinct woolly rhinoceros in its natural habitat on the steppes. Created by Heinrich Harder, a renowned German landscape artist and book illustrator, this colorful depiction brings to life the Coelodonta antiquitatis, a species of rhinoceros that once roamed the northern steppes of Eurasia during the Pleistocene era. The image is part of Wilhelm Bolsches Tiere der Urwelt (Animals of the Prehistoric World), a publication by Reichardt Cocoa company in Hamburg in 1908. It beautifully captures the essence of this prehistoric creature, which lived from the last glacial period until its extinction. Harder's attention to detail and artistic skill are evident in this print, as he accurately portrays every aspect of the woolly rhinoceros' appearance and surroundings. The illustration transports us back in time to witness these magnificent creatures grazing on vast grasslands against a backdrop of rolling hills.
