EDITORS COMMENTS
This trade card, created by the French School in the 19th century, offers a glimpse into a historical moment of great significance. Depicting an exchange between two influential figures, it showcases the response of Comte de Mirabeau to Marquis de Dreux-Breze on June 23rd, 1789. Printed by J Minot in Paris, this chromolitho trade card was used as promotional material for a brand of chicory. However, its artistic value goes far beyond mere advertising. The scene captures the essence of an era marked by political upheaval and social change. Intriguingly dressed in period clothing that reflects their respective positions within aristocracy, Honore Gabriel Riqueti (Comte de Mirabeau) and Henri Evrard (Marquis de Dreux-Breze) engage in what appears to be a heated conversation. Their animated gestures and intense expressions convey the weightiness of their words. The inclusion of quotations adds depth to this image; it suggests that these men were known for their eloquence and influence during this transformative time in history. This trade card not only promotes chicory but also serves as an educational tool, offering viewers insight into significant personalities and events from the past. Preserved within a private collection today, this print is a testament to both artistry and historical documentation. It allows us to reflect on how commerce intertwined with politics during moments of societal change while providing us with visual clues about fashion trends prevalent at
