EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the somber moment of Cetshwayo Kampande, the revered King of the Zulus, under strict guard following his defeat in the historic Battle of Ulundi during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Published in Copenhagen in 1901 as part of "Afrika, Dets Opdagelse, Erobring Og Kolonisation" this image offers a glimpse into a significant chapter in African history. The photograph portrays Cetshwayo Kampande with an air of dignity and resilience despite his captivity. His regal attire serves as a poignant reminder of his former power and authority over one of Africa's most formidable nations. The solemn expression on his face hints at both sorrow for his people's suffering and determination to reclaim their freedom. The composition skillfully juxtaposes Cetshwayo's guarded presence against a backdrop that symbolizes both triumph and tragedy—the battlefield where countless lives were lost. This visual contrast highlights the complex dynamics between colonial powers and indigenous cultures during this period. Ken Welsh's expertly captured image not only documents an important historical event but also invites contemplation about imperialism, resistance, and cultural identity. It serves as a powerful testament to the indomitable spirit embodied by leaders like Cetshwayo Kampande who fought valiantly to protect their land and heritage. As we reflect upon this photograph print today, it reminds us to honor those who have struggled for independence while encouraging dialogue about our shared pasts – ultimately
