This evocative photograph captures the solemn procession of Penitentes Rezagados during Semana Santa, or Holy Week, in Sevilla, Spain. The Penitentes, members of various brotherhoods or cofradias, are seen carrying heavy and ornate floats bearing the images of Christ and the Virgin Mary. Dressed in traditional Nazarene robes and pointed hoods, they bear the crosses and self-flagellate as an act of penance and devotion. The image was taken during the procession, one of the most emotionally charged moments of the Holy Week celebrations in Sevilla. The penitents move slowly through the streets, surrounded by the hushed silence of the crowd, who have gathered to witness this powerful display of faith and tradition. The cruces, or crosses, carried by the penitentes are intricately decorated with gold leaf and precious stones, reflecting the deep devotion and wealth of the cofradias.
