Web of spider exposed to caffeine

Effect of caffeine on spiders. Computer artwork of the orb web of a garden spider (Araneus diadematus) exposed to caffeine. Caffeine is a plant alkaloid found naturally in foods such as coffee beans, tea, kola nuts and cacao beans. A normal orb web consists of radiating threads and a sticky spiral hub (see Z430/519). A spider fed on caffeine-dosed flies produces an erratic and incomplete web, with many parts completely absent. Originally published in NASA Tech Briefs, April 1995

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intriguing effects of caffeine on spiders. In this computer artwork, we witness the orb web of a garden spider (Araneus diadematus) exposed to caffeine, a plant alkaloid commonly found in coffee beans, tea, kola nuts, and cacao beans. The normal structure of an orb web consists of radiating threads and a sticky spiral hub; however, when a spider consumes flies dosed with caffeine, the resulting web becomes erratic and incomplete. The intricate details captured in this monochrome illustration highlight the profound impact that drugs can have on biological systems. As we delve into the realm of zoology and biology through this image, it serves as a reminder that even small substances like caffeine can significantly alter natural processes within organisms. Originally published in NASA Tech Briefs back in April 1995, this thought-provoking artwork sheds light on drug toxicity experiments conducted on arachnids. By exploring how stimulants such as caffeine affect spiders' silk-spinning abilities and their ability to construct functional webs, scientists gain valuable insights into both animal behavior and drug interactions. Through this photograph from Science Photo Library's extensive collection focusing on nature and wildlife subjects like fauna and invertebrates, we are reminded of the interconnectedness between humans and other species inhabiting our planet.
