Uranus. Hubble Space Telescope image of the planet Uranus, showing its ring system
Uranus. Hubble Space Telescope image of the planet Uranus, showing its ring system and six of its moons. The bright moon at lower right is Ariel. Five other faint moons are seen around the rings. Clockwise from the top, they are: Desdemona, Belinda, Portia, Cressida and Puck. Uranus is the seventh major planet from the Sun, orbiting at just under 3 billion kilometres, some 20 times the Earth-Sun distance. The cloud bands and rings are parallel to its equator. Uranus has an axis of rotation in the same plane as its orbit, so it appears to rotate on its side, unlike the other planets. Images taken in August 2003

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enigmatic beauty of Uranus, captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. The image reveals the planet's mesmerizing ring system and six of its moons against a backdrop of deep space. At the lower right corner shines Ariel, a bright moon that stands out amidst its celestial companions. Five other faint moons can be observed gracefully orbiting around the rings: Desdemona, Belinda, Portia, Cressida, and Puck. Uranus, being the seventh major planet from the Sun, resides at an astonishing distance of nearly 3 billion kilometers – approximately 20 times farther than Earth's distance from our star. Its cloud bands and rings align parallel to its equator due to its unique axis of rotation lying in the same plane as its orbit. This peculiarity gives Uranus an extraordinary appearance as it seems to rotate on its side compared to other planets in our solar system. Imaged in August 2003 by Hubble's powerful lens, this photograph offers us a glimpse into one of nature's most breathtaking phenomena. It serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about distant worlds and our relentless pursuit of knowledge about our vast universe.
