Sweet pea flower pollination, SEM

Sweet pea pollination. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains (yellow) on the stigma (green) of a sweet pea flower (Lathyrus odoratus). The pollen grains, which contain male genetic material, have become trapped by the stigmas papillae (hair-like structures, green). The stigma is part of the female reproductive structure (pistil), which is formed from one or more carpels. Each carpel consists of a stigma, a style and an ovary (not seen). If the female sex cells (ovules) in the ovary become fertilised by the pollen grains male sex cells, the carpel may ripen to produce a fruit containing seeds. Magnification: x170 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate process of sweet pea flower pollination. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we witness the delicate dance between male and female genetic material. The vibrant yellow pollen grains are seen adorning the green stigma, which is a crucial part of the pistil, the female reproductive structure. The stigmas papillae, represented by hair-like structures in green, act as traps for these pollen grains. This mesmerizing image highlights nature's ingenious mechanism to ensure successful reproduction in plants like sweet peas. Each carpel, formed from one or more carpels, consists of a stigma, style, and ovary (not visible). Within this ovary lie the potential seeds that hold future life. If fertilization occurs when male sex cells from the pollen grains meet with female sex cells (ovules) within the ovary, it sets off a chain reaction leading to fruit production. With a magnification of x170 at 6x7cm size, this SEM photograph provides us with an up-close look at this vital stage in plant development. It serves as a reminder of both the beauty and complexity found within our natural world. This stunning image captures not only scientific significance but also evokes appreciation for botanical wonders such as sweet pea flowers and their remarkable reproductive processes.
