Boomerang Nebula

Boomerang Nebula, Hubble Space Telescope image. This is a bipolar reflection nebula, where gas and dust surrounding a star are shining by reflected light. The gas and dust in the nebula have been ejected by the star in two polar jets, moving in opposite directions, a process known as bipolar outflow. It is thought that the star at the centre of this nebula is an old red giant star. The nebula is around 2 light years in length. The Boomerang Nebula is 5000 light years from Earth, in the constellation Centaurus. This image was obtained in 2005 with Hubbles Advanced Camera for Surveys instrument. The results were published in January 2006

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Boomerang Nebula, as captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. Located 5000 light years away from Earth in the constellation Centaurus, this celestial wonder is a bipolar reflection nebula. The gas and dust surrounding a central red giant star illuminate through reflected light, creating a stunning visual spectacle. The image reveals two polar jets emanating from the star in opposite directions, known as bipolar outflow. This process involves the ejection of gas and dust into space, shaping the nebula into its distinctive form. Stretching over an impressive length of approximately 2 light years, it serves as a testament to stellar evolution and astrophysical phenomena. Taken in 2005 using Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys instrument, this photograph offers insights into star birth and stellar formation within our vast universe. Its intricate details provide astronomers with valuable data to further unravel mysteries about our cosmic surroundings. As we marvel at this snapshot from deep space, let us appreciate both its scientific significance and aesthetic allure. The Boomerang Nebula reminds us of humanity's insatiable curiosity to explore beyond our own Milky Way galaxy while igniting our imagination with its ethereal charm.
