SEM of the bird cherry aphid

Scanning electron micrograph, tinted green, of the bird cherry aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (also known as Aphis avenae), next to its recently cast off exoskeleton. It is seen feeding on barley (Hordeum vulgare). The exoskeleton is made of inelastic chitin which is shed 5 times before adulthood to allow growth. This species is an economic pest, transmitting two viral diseases, yellow dwarf virus & maize leaf fleck virus, which infect crops such as oats, barley, wheat & maize. Transmission occurs when the aphid inserts its proboscis & feeds on sugar stored in the leaves (as here). Large infestations cause the leaves of a plant to wilt & fall. Magnification: X 14 at 35mm size. Original is BW print Z295/048

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a bird cherry aphid, tinted in a striking shade of green. Captured through scanning electron microscopy, the image reveals the aphid next to its recently discarded exoskeleton while feasting on barley. The exoskeleton, composed of rigid chitin, is shed multiple times during growth before reaching adulthood. However, this seemingly delicate creature holds significant economic importance as it serves as a vector for two viral diseases: yellow dwarf virus and maize leaf fleck virus. These viruses pose threats to vital crops such as oats, barley, wheat, and maize. The transmission occurs when the aphid inserts its proboscis into plant leaves to extract stored sugars. As depicted here, large infestations can lead to wilting and eventual shedding of leaves in affected plants. With a magnification level of X 14 at 35mm size, this black-and-white print offers an up-close view into the world of these tiny yet impactful insects. Through this stunning photograph from Science Photo Library's extensive collection on nature and wildlife subjects like zoology and insect life cycles are brought vividly to life. It serves as a reminder that even creatures we may overlook can have profound effects on our agricultural systems and ecosystems at large.
