Orion nebula (M42 and M43)
Orion nebula. Hubble Space Telescope mosaic of the Orion nebula (M42; NGC 1976), which is 1500 light years away in the constellation Orion. This is one of the most detailed astronomical images ever produced (as of 2006). It shows thousands of stars never seen before in visible light. Nebulae are huge clouds of interstellar gas and dust. This is an emission nebula, a region of starbirth. It glows red due to the ionisation of the hydrogen gas it contains by radiation from four hot young stars, the trapezium stars, at its core. M42s smaller neighbour M43 (NGC 1982) is seen at top left

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the breathtaking beauty of the Orion Nebula (M42 and M43), a celestial wonder located 1500 light years away in the constellation Orion. Taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, this mosaic image is an extraordinary display of intricate details, making it one of the most remarkable astronomical images ever produced as of 2006. The mesmerizing scene reveals thousands of stars that have never been seen before in visible light, unveiling a universe teeming with undiscovered wonders. Nebulae like this are colossal clouds composed of interstellar gas and dust, creating a stunning visual spectacle. As an emission nebula, this region serves as a cosmic cradle for new stars to be born. The vibrant red glow emanating from its core is caused by hydrogen gas being ionized by radiation emitted from four young hot stars known as the trapezium stars. In addition to capturing M42's grandeur, this photo also includes its smaller neighbor M43 at the top left corner. Together they form an awe-inspiring cosmic tapestry that reminds us of our infinitesimal place within the vastness of space. This Science Photo Library print not only offers a glimpse into our astrophysical understanding but also invites us to contemplate the sheer magnificence and complexity present in our universe.
