Deep Space 1 craft

Deep Space 1 spacecraft. Computer illustration of NASAs Deep Space 1 spacecraft, launched on 24th October 1998 to test new technologies. It was the first craft to use solar electric (ion) propul- sion. The solar arrays (pale blue) gathered elect- ricity which was used to ionise xenon gas, which was then forced out of the spacecrafts rear (blue cone). This is very efficient: only 11.5 kilograms of fuel was used during the 600 million kilometre trip to the asteroid Braille. Deep Space 1 also had artificial intelligence, carrying out repairs and reacting to unusual situations, meaning less work was needed from the controllers on Earth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the groundbreaking Deep Space 1 craft, a true marvel of technological innovation. Launched on October 24th, 1998 by NASA, this spacecraft was specifically designed to test new technologies that would revolutionize space exploration as we know it. What sets Deep Space 1 apart is its pioneering use of solar electric (ion) propulsion. The pale blue solar arrays elegantly harness electricity from the sun, which is then utilized to ionize xenon gas. This ionized gas is subsequently expelled out of the spacecraft's rear in a mesmerizing display represented by the striking blue cone. The efficiency achieved by this revolutionary propulsion system is truly remarkable. Astonishingly, only a mere 11.5 kilograms of fuel were consumed during its awe-inspiring journey spanning an astonishing distance of 600 million kilometers to reach the asteroid Braille. Deep Space 1 also boasts artificial intelligence capabilities that allowed it to autonomously perform repairs and respond to unexpected situations encountered along its interstellar voyage. This advanced feature significantly reduced the workload for mission controllers back on Earth while ensuring seamless operations throughout its mission duration. This stunning artwork not only captures the beauty and intricacy of Deep Space 1 but also symbolizes humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge through research and exploration in outer space. It serves as a testament to our unwavering commitment towards pushing boundaries and expanding our understanding of the universe we inhabit.
