Coloured SEM of the head of a silk moth, Bombyx sp

Silk moth head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a silk moth (Bombyx mori). This is a male moth, as the antennae (upper left and right) are large and feathery. The male moth uses its antennae to detect pheromones released by the female, and to guide him towards her. The moths eyes (blue/green) are seen at centre. Silk moths have long been bred for the silk their caterpillars produce around their pupae. Silk has been spun from this material for over 4000 years, the practice originating in China. The caterpillars feed only on the white mulberry plant (Morus alba). Magnification: x15 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a silk moth's head, captured through a colored scanning electron microscope (SEM). The subject of this image is a male silk moth, distinguished by its large and feathery antennae positioned at the upper left and right corners. These impressive sensory organs play a crucial role in the moth's life, enabling it to detect pheromones released by females and navigate towards potential mates. At the center of the image, we are drawn to the mesmerizing blue-green eyes of this magnificent creature. Silk moths have long been revered for their ability to produce silk from their caterpillars' cocoons. This ancient practice dates back over 4000 years in China, where these remarkable insects were selectively bred for their valuable silk fibers. The caterpillars that give rise to these splendid moths exclusively feed on leaves from white mulberry plants (Morus alba), further highlighting nature's delicate balance between species interdependence. With a magnification level of x15 at 6x7cm size, this photograph offers us an up-close glimpse into the fascinating world of insect anatomy. Immerse yourself in the wonders of nature with this stunning print from Science Photo Library—a true testament to both scientific exploration and artistic appreciation.
