Liver cancer cells, SEM

Liver cancer cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells, showing the numerous filopodia (hair-like) covering their surface. Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common type of liver cancer. It tends to occur in livers damaged by genetic defects, alcohol abuse, or chronic infection with diseases such as hepatitis B and C. Primary liver cancer, which starts in the liver, is relatively rare in the UK, with about 3, 600 people diagnosed each year. However, because of the prevalence of hepatitis caused by contagious viruses, it accounts for up to half of all cancers in some undeveloped countries. Magnification: x3000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases liver cancer cells under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image reveals two hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells, the most common type of liver cancer. What makes this visual particularly striking are the numerous filopodia, resembling hair-like structures, that cover the surface of these malignant cells. Liver cancer primarily affects livers damaged by genetic defects, alcohol abuse, or chronic infections such as hepatitis B and C. While relatively rare in the UK with around 3,600 annual diagnoses, it is alarmingly prevalent in some undeveloped countries where up to half of all cancers can be attributed to primary liver cancer. With a magnification of x3000 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this SEM image provides an intricate view into the world of oncology and hepatology. It serves as a reminder of the complex nature of diseases like hepatocellular carcinoma and highlights the importance of healthcare advancements in understanding and treating such conditions. Displayed by Science Photo Library without any commercial intent mentioned here, this photograph represents both scientific progress and medical challenges. By shedding light on these abnormal liver cells through vibrant colors and microscopic detail, it invites us to contemplate ongoing research efforts aimed at combating liver cancer for improved patient outcomes worldwide.
