Multiple births, satirical artwork

Multiple births. 16th century artwork showing multiple births of dogs (centre) and humans (right). Seven births are depicted, common for dogs but very rare for humans. There is one documented example of septuplets from the 15th century, and the scene depicted here combines satire and humour. This woodcut illustration is from a circa 1510 edition of the Vergier d honneur, a book by the medieval French poets Andre de la Vigne and Octavien de Saint-Gelais. This copy of this artwork is from Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a satirical artwork from the 16th century, showcasing multiple births of both dogs and humans. In the center of the illustration, we see seven adorable puppies being born, a common occurrence for dogs but incredibly rare for humans. The right side of the image depicts a scene that combines satire and humor, as it portrays seven human babies being born simultaneously. During this era, septuplets were an extraordinary phenomenon, with only one documented case from the 15th century. This artwork beautifully blends historical context with playful exaggeration to create an intriguing narrative. The woodcut illustration originates from a circa 1510 edition of "Vergier d'honneur" a book by medieval French poets Andre de la Vigne and Octavien de Saint-Gelais. This particular copy is featured in Eugen Hollander's renowned work "Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin" (Caricature and Satire in Medicine) published in 1921. Eugen Hollander was not only an esteemed German art historian but also a physician who delved into medical history through his research on caricatures and satire. His collection showcases this remarkable piece that highlights various themes such as medicine, gynecology, obstetrics, history of childbirths, and even royalty. This thought-provoking photograph offers us a glimpse into centuries-old artistic expression while inviting us to ponder upon the fascinating aspects of human reproduction throughout history.
